Meet the Team

Vionna Jones, Owner
After attending the Pennsylvania State University and earning a BS in Civil Engineering, I came to the DC area to work in site development. I enjoyed being a civil engineer and seeing my designs become a reality, but there was something missing. I didn't like sitting at a computer for nine hours a day. I wanted to interact with people. In 2002, I earned a Masters in Community Planning from the University of Maryland. I thought this would help me to be able to work with communities and help people; however, it was difficult for me to land a job in this field.

My new life in DC started out very sedentary, so I started to exercise. I did not exercise in college. I felt that all the walking I did was enough exercise for me. I enjoyed exercising so much; I decided to become certified as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer in 2004. In June of 2005, I decided to take leave of absence from my engineering job to become a full time fitness professional. That was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made!

In preparing to become a personal trainer, I began to research the benefits of exercise for expectant mothers. I came to realize that expectant mothers may not be aware of these benefits, or they may be hesitant to exercise on their own. That is when I became dedicated to helping women enjoy healthy pregnancies, have healthy babies and return to their pre-pregnancy fitness levels with ease.

Kristen Krash
Kristen began her evolution from gym rat to yogi in 1999 when she walked into a Power Yoga class at the gym where she worked as a trainer. Seeking relief from multiple injuries she suffered in martial arts and while working as a bike
messenger, she immediately felt the benefits of the postures and breathing. The experience led her to local yoga studios in Chicago and, within a few months, she knew that she would practice yoga for the rest of her life.

Kristen's classes incorporate the dynamics of movement with longer, exploratory holds of postures and "mini-clinics" within a class that often focus on a particular part of the anatomy or an aspect of yogic philosophy. While using the body and the breath as her main teaching tools, she still strives to give her students an idea of the "bigger picture" of practicing asana so that they can fully receive the gift that is yoga.

Shaylah is a Washington, DC native who began studying the art of bellydancing seven years ago as one of the original members of the Moor Hips Bellydance troupe. She has danced and taught workshops throughout the USA and Caribbean. Her goal is to bring attention and awareness to the true roots of ancient African Bellydance and to promote physical, mental and emotional healing through the dance. She is a founding member of the Bellydancers of Color Association (BOCA) who sponsors a festival every year that brings dancers of color from all over the world.

Shaylah has been privileged to train and attend workshops with Dr. Sunyatta Amen, Tarik Sultan, Nabeela El Shalimar, Somra El Nubia, Morocco and many more. She balances dancing with her full time career as a homeschooling mother of four, wife, natural childbirth educator (Bradley Method®) and doula. Shaylah has danced through two pregnancies and used the movements to enhance her birth experience. Women in her classes have learned how to tune into their bodies and nurture their feminine energy. Maya Taahira

Maya Taahira is the founder and Artistic Director of the Triple Goddess Tribal Belly Dance Troupe, a performance group that embraces women at every stage of their lives: innocent youth, fertile middle years, and wise elderhood. She studied Middle Eastern Dance for 10 years in the United States and Germany with internationally renowned dancers including Suhaila Salimpour, Saqra Raybuck, Artemis Mourat, and Rhea of Athens, Greece.

She has taught for the last 6 years at yoga studios, YMCAs, and community centers, most recently finishing a contract with the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC, where she taught over 100 children to belly dance in three weeks! Her pre- and post- natal belly dancing workshops and classes were sponsored by the Midwives' Alliance of North America, the International Caesarean Awareness Network of Baltimore, and the Birth Options Alliance (formerly known as the Takoma Park Birthing Circle). In addition, Maya danced and taught throughout her two pregnancies and is now teaching her sons Middle Eastern music and movement.

She believes, along with many other dancers and researchers, that the movements of belly dancing help women strengthen and tone their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. But it is the artistic nature of the dance that helps provide women with a creative outlet to express their individual femininity to exotic melodies and enticing rhythms.

Come try it! You'll have so much fun dancing you will forget you're working out!
